Origin The earliest reference to kanji (or congee) dates back to approximately 1,000 B.C., China during the Zhou dynasty, making it more than 3000 years old. Today, congee is a type of rice porridge or fermented rice water found in many Asian countries, and is prepared in a exciting assortment from savoury to sweet, or thin watery versions to thick glutinous types. With so many varieties found around the world, it is no surprise this comfort-food found its way to Sri Lanka.
